Cécile Kyenge Kashetu, born in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Came to Italy in 1983 and obtained the degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Catholic University of Rome, then specialized in ophthalmology at the University of Modena and pursued her professional activity at various healthcare centres in Modena and province. At the same time, she was involved in social promotion and integration service, with special reference to Africa.
She has promoted and coordinated healthcare operators on immigration medicine.
She has been engaged in the associationism and promotion of full citizenship of immigrants.
In 2004, she was elected councillor in Modena, Ward 3, and subsequently became provincial representative for the Democratic Party (PD) in the Forum for Intermational and Immigration Cooperation.
On 25 February 2013, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, XVII legislature, thereafter being appointed Minister for Integration in this legislature.
On 25 May 2014, she was elected on the European Parliament.
